I ordered this based on a random youtube video I saw that extolled Jonathan Hickman as a comic writer, so pretty much no expectations. This book is soooo crazy good. The alt-history is part western, part sci-fi, part biblical prophecy, I LOVE IT. what a great genre mashup. The story is compelling (bought vol 2,3,4 before I finished vol 1). The setting is diverse and beautiful. The characters have depth and real motivations. On par with the best graphic novels I've read (Saga, Sandman, Hellboy). really, really enjoyed this. Jonathan Hickman's concept here has the distinction of being four or five somewhat cliched concepts combined in a completely novel way: Dust-punk, the a high technology grim meat hook, the four horsemen, and Westerns with a post-communist flair. Flourishes of orientalism and Western cliche aside, the story is at least interesting. It's also a little humorless, and so high concept, it's sometimes a little hard to dig into the story as no character has a sympathetic human vantage point. Ultra-violent, but Nick Dragotta's art and design is very compelling. The character impetus for Death is a cliche, but the character is interesting if a bit static in this first volume. This holds a lot of promise.
